Why Appearance and Body Language is Crucial For Your Success in Professional Life

Body language and appearance falls under the non-verbal communication category. The power of body language is often underestimated. The fact is that no matter how wisely you choose your words, if your appearance or body language is not supporting the message you are trying to convey, it's not going to work. Body language is much more than making eye contact, firm handshake or continuously smiling (smiling is good but having a smile on your face all the time can make you look quite sheepish).

Following are some points that you must remember and apply in your business meetings and communications.

Getting the aid of appearance:

When we talk of appearance, it includes both.

i) Your appearance in oral communication
ii) The appearance of your message in written communication

Good brains are undoubtedly more important, but good looks do not go in vain either. In fact, they become essential if meeting with clients or making sales is included in your job description. Spend some of your earnings on buying good professional dresses, shoes, jewelry or perfume. As far as written communication is concerned, use good quality papers, envelopes, and most importantly a neat organized message. Typos or grammatical mistakes will also ruin the appearance of your message.

Body Language:

Your body posture, gestures, expressions, hand movements or your voice tone, each of them contributes in making your communication effective or ineffective. The sooner you realize it, the better your chances to improve. Imagine yourself in different professional scenarios and visualize your body language. Were you too aggressive or dominant when communicating with your subordinates? Did you have that closed body posture during the last business meeting you had? Do you think your interviewee noticed that you were nervous, even when all of your answers were reasonably good? Body language can convey some pretty useful messages even before you have uttered a single word.

Improving your body language:

Improving your body language takes practice and a lot it. It's not easy to change your gestures, movements or posture that you have been carrying since your childhood, but it's not impossible at all. Start from your facial expressions and voice. Make eye contacts when necessary; try not to reveal the negative emotions during business meetings from your face e.g. boredom, anger or tiredness. Record your voice and then listen to it. This practice will give you an idea on how understandable your oral communication is. Avoid making gestures as much as you can, especially if you are meeting some foreigners. Don't make unnecessary movements while talking; it will only distract your audience. You can even control your nervousness by just acting more confident. Ask your friends or family members to comment on your body language and if they are kind enough to point out some shortcomings, try to improve on them.

The Art of Reading Body Language

One way of getting people to be more open to your ideas and suggestions is to be able to read their body language, interpret it, and change your strategy accordingly.

But how can we read people's body language?

Well for instance, if someone shows interest in what you say there are some tell tale movements that can give you clues.

They point their feet toward you.

They tilt their head forward.

The wideness of their eyes: The wider they are the more interested they usually are.

They maintain eye contact for more than 60% of the time.

They smile frequently. You have to be careful with this one though, an oblong smile back behind both sets of teeth is usually a fake smile.

If they tend to agree they will display signs like:

The palms of their hands are open

They put their hands flat on the table

They nod their heads

They unbutton their jackets

So what are some of the signs that people are lying?

They constantly clear their throat or swallow.

They tap their hands or feet.

They blink very fast.

They look elsewhere and avoid eye contact.

They shift position from one place to another.

As you can see this is just a small sample of ideas, and this subject is something that has to be studied for someone to become good at it. People also behave out of character sometimes, especially in high stress situations like in a job interview for example, so reading them becomes more difficult and you need more than one or two gestures to be accurate.

The Power of Body Language

The subtitle of this book ("How to succeed in every business and social encounter") gives a clue about how much information Tonya Reiman has amassed. She states that as much as 93 percent of our interpersonal communication is nonverbal. The book is about both how to read others' nonverbal messages and how to control your body to achieve your goals.

Her "five immutable truths of body language" explain her passion:

1. Body language is a constant.

2. Body language is always determined by context.

3. Body language can never be judged based on one single signal.

4. Body language reveals the discrepancies between what a person says and what a person truly believes.

5. Body language mastery allows you to tune in to "microexpressions," the brief flashes or gestures that betray inner feelings.

Until reading the book, I had considered myself good at paying attention to body language. For example, the next time you're in a group of people who are talking, look at the direction people's feet are pointing. If a person's feet are pointing away from the group, they are no longer engaged.

She has chapters on the language of: the face (including reading emotion, lip gestures, nose and chin expressions, etc.), the body (hands, torso, arms), of space and touch (the four zones of space and the 14 social touches), and sound (vocal cues). Additionally, she has a wealth of information on secret signals and first impressions. Each chapter also contains what the language means ("What to watch for") and how to use it for your personal benefit ("What you should work on"). As she describes, the information can be used to both build rapport and/or manipulate people.

The book isn't a casual read - it's more like a study course. Read about a gesture or two, go into a social situation, and watch for it (in context). It's another great skill to have in your social toolkit.

Job Interview - How Your Body Language Can Affect Your Interview

After re-structuring your resume, spending hours on employment search engines, sending out dozens of applications and speaking to several potential employers in a telephone interview - you have finally scored the ultimate - a job interview! All you have to do is to walk in there and wow them with your impressive list of skills and achievements. Right? Not so fast. Did you know that your body can betray you? Body language, all those jitters and gestures, can convey an impression that you may not want to convey. Here are some things you may want to watch for:

• A firm handshake will give a good impression to a potential employer at a job interview - but not too firm which can appear aggressive and arrogant. Shake hands firmly but not too powerfully and look straight at the other person. If you are being introduced to more than one person, it is better to go around the table and shake hands rather than leaning over the table. Look at each person and say your name - don't assume that they will know it.

• During your job interview try to adopt a posture that shows interest but still comes across as being relaxed. You can do this by sitting up straight in your chair at the beginning of the job interview, with your back against the back of the chair. Leaning forward shows that you are interested in what is being said and that the person conducting the interview has captured your attention. However, sitting on the edge of the chair comes across as being tense and may be interpreted as your feeling uncomfortable.

• What to do with your hands during a job interview? In a difficult situation we are often inclined to fold our arms across our body. It is better not to do this as arms crossed comes across as defensive. It is better to let your hands lie easily in your lap or on the armrests. Hand movements can help to liven up the interview. The fact that you dare to make movements with your hands during a job interview might indicate that you feel at ease quickly.

• Head tilted to the side shows interest as does nodding the head. Head straight up signals a neutral attitude to what is being said while the head down reads as negative and judgmental and whether that is what you are trying to convey or not, it is not how you want to be interpreted.

• Bringing a hand to the back of the neck shows that you are trying to pull out of the conversation as if the questions being asked are not ones that you are willing to pursue. It makes you seem as if you have something to hide.

• Legs crossed can make you look lopsided and therefore lacking in confidence or defensive. Sit straight at a job interview, facing the potential employer directly.

• Picking imaginary fluff from clothing signals that you don't agree with what is being said and the person conducting the job interview can take huge umbrage at being more or less 'dismissed'.

• Pay attention to inadvertent movements that you may make sometimes during a job interview due to nervousness. For example, shuffling with your feet or kicking against the leg of a table can be very irritating for other people. Drumming with your fingers or clicking with a pen also won't be a great contribution to the interview. So pay attention!

Body language works both ways and it is important to be aware of how the person conducting the job interview is relating to you. For instance, if he/she shakes their head, sighs or fold their arms you can interpret this as a subconscious sign of displeasure. Take note of what you are saying that might cause them to be annoyed and take immediate steps to turn the job interview around before they even realize that they are irritated. Realise that the job interview is more than just a means for the employer to determine which of the candidates is most suitable for the job. The job interview especially is a moment of mutual acquaintance. It's a first meeting with people that you might soon work together with. Therefore the boss should actually be just as nervous as you!

The solution is 'Body language' because it is an obvious method of showing an individual how they feel and what they wish to say. Your eyes, facial expressions, and the movements of your body will truly express that you want to engage in a romantic or an intimate relationship with another.

What The Eyes Might Show - A person's eyes are powerful indicators of romance or even physical attraction because they are able to make expressions, flirt, and even seduce much more better than spoken words. Eye to eye contact may not mean anything if it just occurs briefly, but when it lasts longer and with a consuming look, then they are probably into you, though winking may additionally work, but it calls for proper timing. An additional strong evidence of attraction is when an individual catches your eye, looks away, then looks at you once again, although, if they glance away and never looks back again, it is a clear signal that they're uninterested.

Smile And Facial Expressions - The smile is one of the greatest indications that an individual is attracted to you, though ensure that you know how to discern a fake smile from a earnest one. Elevating the eyebrows, though usually unconsciously, has also been observed to be performed by people that are flirting with one another.

The Magic Of Contact - Sometimes, leaning towards another is just not adequate though getting closer is a lot better being a soft tap or stroking of the arm can transmit electric signs to the other individual. Many individuals will pretend that there is something on their face or something foreign on the clothes to get an excuse to touch.

They love to preen, play with their hair, tossing their hair across the shoulder, and mess with things within their hands like a glass. Biting and licking their lips, putting on lipstick, eating or drinking slowly are the usual moves of an interested woman.

Body Language Flirting Tips & Tricks

Forget all about pick-up lines. There out. Dead. Instead, you need to focus on mastering the art of body language flirting. When used properly, it is more powerful than anything you might say to a woman. This is an incredibly powerful tool for seduction. Here's why.

First, you can communicate with a woman even if she is on the other side of the room. Second, a woman will feel more at ease if she is getting signals from you that you're interested. Women hate rejection just as much, if not more, than we do.

The following are three examples of body language flirting that you can use:

Body Language Tip #1 - Smile and Be "Open"

Avoid being the guy sitting by himself, looking mean at the bar. The room could be full of single women looking for a man to talk to, but if you're not presenting yourself as being approachable you'll never get a shot.

Make a point of making eye contact with women. Always smile and greet them as they walk by, even if you aren't necessarily interested. This will let those who may be watching you know that you are friendly and willing to talk. Keep from crossing your arms or putting your hands in your pockets. Relaxed body language will make those around you feel more relaxed as well. Working to keep your body language open and friendly will greatly increase your chances of meeting a woman.

Body Language Tip #2 - Use the Wink... But Sparingly

There's a right way and a wrong way to wink. Doing it the right way will quickly spark a woman's interest. Doing it the wrong way can be more than a little creepy for her. The technique is simple - make sure to smile first.

Using a wink works well when you aren't necessarily able to approach her. Using the smile and wink will effectively let her know that you are interested in finding out more about her. Don't be surprised if you find a woman who is bold enough to approach you after using this tip!

Just remember that once is enough. More than that and you'll start moving into the creepy zone.

Body Language Tip #3 - The Head Tilt

With this tip, you'll tilt your head toward her when she says something interesting. This is just a slight tilt and not a bow. Subtlety is key. This tip is good for letting a woman know that you find her interesting without using a lot of facial expression.

When used properly, these tips will help you meet and build a rapport with more women.

How to Read Body Language - Top 10 Tips

Interested in learning how to read body language? Would you like to be able to tell when people are lying and understand people's intentions? This article will provide you with the top 10 tips for reading body language.

I feel Body Language is the most important language you can learn. It bypasses the verbal communication barriers and gives you an insight into what others might be thinking, or what actions they are likely to take.

Remember that the art of being able to read body language is to be able to look at some one, pick up the signals, and at the same time not let on to that person you are doing this. If you do the person will become uncomfortable.

Tip 1. - Eyes

Dilated pupils - the person is interested in the topic.

People say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. They can tell so much information about the person if you know what you are looking for. As in most situations, the same signal can be interpreted in a different way. It depends entirely on the circumstances at hand. The example above could also mean that the person is on drugs, or it could mean that they are focused.

Tip 2. - Hands

Open palm.- the person is relaxed and comfortable.

The hands have many expressions and are a good place to start when learning how to read body language. Generally when some ones hands are open it means that their defenses are relaxed.

Tip 3 - Mimicking

When you are talking to someone, if they are mimicking your body position and action it means that they are comfortable in the situation and most likely interested by you and what you are saying.

Tip 4 - Eyes

If someone's eyes are gazing to the side it is a trait that they are feeling guilty. Likewise if they are gazing down this express's shame. Remember the eyes have so many meanings and it's easy to make the wrong evaluation. Practice makes perfect.

Tip 5 - Arms

The main two expressions with arms is that they are either closed (folded) or open. When folded the person is possibly angry or disapproving. When their arms are open the person is in an honest position and is accepting of the situation.

Tip 6 - Rubbing of the Chin

If someone is rubbing their chin it generally means that they are thinking.

Tip 7 - Feet

When you are in conversation with someone you can tell if they are comfortable and interested by what you are saying by their feet position. When standing opposite one another the other persons feet are facing in your direction. This means that they are comfortable and their head and eyes will also be focused on you.

When standing opposite someone their feet are pointing away and their head and eyes are not focused on you. They will most likely be nodding and agreeing with a fake smile. This means that the person n question is not interested and might even feel uncomfortable in the situation.

Tip 8 - Legs

When stood up Legs are a good indicator of how confident someone is. If someone is standing with their legs shoulder width apart they are relaxed. If they are standing with a stance wider than that they are a confident and are in a grounded position to show they are in control.

When stood up with legs crossed the person is probably shy.

When sitting down if the legs are crossed it shows the person is in protective mode. This is very much used alongside crossed arm action.

If the legs are open when the person is seated then they are in a relaxed position. The same as when standing.

Tip 9 - Fingers

Fingers can create many gestures and are great for reading body language. A pointing finger can either be someone pointing to a item or place, it can also indicate anger. If someone is curling their fingers tightly they are usually pleading for some thing.

Drumming or tapping with the fingers indicates frustration. The faster the beating, the greater the frustration and tension inside the person.

Tip 10 - Eyebrows

The eyebrows have many uses. Listed below are some examples. When the eye brows are raised, normally the person is shocked or surprised. The greater the surprise the more raised they will be. When someone flicks their eye brow up and down quickly they are greeting someone else or are showing they have acknowledged them.

I hope you have enjoyed learning how to read body language tips. Remember reading body language is not a skill that can be learned over night. The more you practice the easier it will become and the more subtle you will be able to do it.

Neal Hendes has a passion for body language. He loves to encourage people to become more developed in reading body language and has an online blog [http://learntoreadbodylanguage.wordpress.com]How To Read Body Language which you can visit to find out more information on the subject.

Signs of Attraction - Body Language - Signs of Love and Attraction

As I was searching for love, I had great fun learning some basics of body language in relation to physical attraction. It was fun to be near someone I found attractive and see if he reciprocated what I felt. It was a helpful tool during the very first meetings and during the initial dates!

Attraction signs of the body:

- Especially if sitting, his/her foot is likely to be pointing towards you
- Or their legs will be crossed TOWARDS you
- They will turn towards you or at least have the trunk of their body face towards you (so they may turn towards you in a way that their trunk is at least facing you)
- They will come very close to you if they can (this will of course also depend on their culture, the circumstance etc)
- If you two are on 'speaking terms', during your exchanges he/she will touch you, even if in a seemingly casual way (but of course there are people who touch you no matter what, so you need to verify by checking other attractions signs)
- His/her head may be tilted
- They will touch their face during conversation
- Their lips may be slightly parted
- They will exhibit grooming behaviours such as adjusting their clothes, checking their face (or parts of), adjust their hair, etc)
- They may touch their face, often near the eyes whilst talking to you or looking at you.

Moreover: a man will sit in front of you and acquire a straighter, more 'squared' posture in order to 'show off' his shoulders and chest as well as displaying (subconsciously) his sexual areas; he may also sit or stand with his legs apart and his head held high and, at times, roll up their sleeves (all subconscious showing-off gestures)

a woman will stroke her hair or/and touch/stroke her neck in your presence, or whilst looking at your or whilst you two are talking; she may also thrust our her breasts in your presence.

Attraction signs of the eyes:

- They will look at your eyes, then will look at another part of your face, sometimes from eye to eye to mouth, other times along your hair; it's a form of 'caressing your face' with their eyes
- They may look at you and then look away, often looking back at your raising their eyes/eyebrows
- They may just raise their eyebrows
- Their pupils will be more dilated than they would normally in that particular environment/light, so if you can check others' pupils in the same room/area for comparison.
- Their eyes may be watery

Mirroring your movements or gestures is also a sign of attraction. Similarly, if you wish to make someone feel at ease, you could mirror his/her movements. In order to determine physical attractions, you don't have to notice all of the above signs, because it obviously also depends on the circumstances (where you are at that time, for example). But if you notice many of the above signs, he/she is attracted to you! Congratulations!

However, remember that some 'players' may be using the body language to manipulate you. This is why, if you are searching for love and nothing less, you must learn to determine, as you two date, if he/she genuinely cares for you and your well being. Love and physical attractions are not the same thing! It may be helpful to read the rel=nofollow [http://mysearchingforlove.com]n.1 rule to love (go to the left side menu and click on the title 'N.1 Love Search Rule') in order to 'diagnose' the situation between you and him/her, as you are dating or having a relationship.

Even after you have become body language experts in the area of physical attraction, you may wish to remember that if you are seriously searching for lasting, fulfilling love you will not rely solely on physical attraction nor mere compatibilities. Learning what type of relationship is likely to be most fulfilling will be of great help in determining if he or she is a good 'match' and if you are wising up in your love search.

Be Aware of Your Body Language When Doing Public Speaking

Are you the one who has a job that forces you to speak in public? As a public speaker, you should be aware of what your body is saying to your audience because when doing any form of public speaking, your body is your instrument. Even if you are simply nervous, shy, cold or physically uncomfortable, you must make your movements and stance correspond with your verbal delivery.

You should be aware of your body language from the moment you stand up until your presentation is complete because whether you are speaking or not and regardless of what you are or are not saying, your body is always communicating. Your body is always communicating messages that are magnified before an audience. Your audiences will analyze your body language, even if they are unaware of this at the conscious level.

There are four main aspects of body language that you should consider; what to do with your eyes, what your facial expressions indicate, the positioning and movement of your body and limbs, and your hand gestures.

During a presentation, a public speaker needs to make eye contact with the audiences even though that contact only lasts for 1-2 seconds per person. Making good eye contact with your audience helps you to regulate the communication flow and convey a sense of intimacy and warmth that you are really interested in your audience.

Have you ever seen someone who speaks without exhibiting any expressions at all? That is why, showing expression in public speaking is a must to make your audience feel more comfortable sitting there listening to you.

You should also plant yourself in one spot for the duration of your talk. However, if you speak for a long time, you can move occasionally. Pick a spot, walk there slowly, and remain there.

Related to your hand gestures, do not ever cross your arms because it creates an instant barrier between you and your audience. Public speakers who have a habit of standing with their arms crossed are seen as untrustworthy speakers.

Public Speaking and the Importance of Body Language and Eye Contact

Public speaking is a necessary skill to have when you are trying to climb the success ladder or even trying to get through a project for school. A lot of people will tell you that when you are speaking in public to just picture everyone in their underwear, but that doesn't really work. When you are addressing an audience, you want to make sure that you are always away of certain key factors; your body language, your pronunciations, your eye contact with the audience, and your visual aids because it can never hurt to have people see an example of what you are talking about.

When it comes to your body language while speaking in public, there are a lot of habits that you do want to avoid doing. If you're nervous, you want to ensure that the audience you are addressing does not realize it. When you're in front of all those people, you want to make sure that you do not cross your legs or fidget with your feet. If you have a habit of crinkling things that are in your hand when you get nervous, try not to hold anything. Instead, what you may want to do is remember key phrases to remember your speech in its entirety. You must always remember to keep a solid stance as well, if you're shifting back in forth it may distract the audience from what you're trying to say. Your body language is a huge part in conveying your knowledge of the topic you are talking about.

Along with your body language, you want to always ensure that you pronounce your words correctly. A common problem with being nervous is you begin to stutter and aren't able to say your words correctly. If you're in front of the audience and you begin to st-st-st, people may begin to tone you out and no longer listen to what you have to say. Pronunciation is key in having your audience intrigued in what you have to say because if you use catching words, they're going to want to know more and stay intrigued to see what you have to say next.

While standing in front of an audience, you want to make sure that your eye contact is level with there. You don't want to stare at them, but glance around the room to let every person that is in the room know that you are talking to them. If you just stare at the floor the entire time, your audience may get the picture that you are not very confident and don't have a very good idea as to what you're talking about. If you're using index cards for your speech, you want to make sure that you just glance at them and that you aren't reading off of them. If you're just reading off of index cards, you audience may become bored. When pointing out portions of your visual aid, you want to ensure that you look into the audience while using the visual aid.

Now, if you're using a visual aid to further get your point across, you want to use as an enhancer not as the main part of the speech. When creating your visual aid, you want to make sure that it is big enough that the audience will be able to see it without much disruption in the room. Depending on the environment in which you're going to be speaking, you can either use bright and big displays or the typical official looking statistics. Whichever you use, you want to make sure that you point out what you're talking about while keeping eye contact with your audience.

If you use all these tips while giving a speech, you are most likely to get very positive results. You're more likely to get positive results because you'll show that you're confident in what you're presenting and that you have the knowledge required to present the item. Just always remember, body language, pronunciation, eye contact, and visual aids. Those are the keys to a fantastic speech.

Body Language in Business - How to Find the Most Important Person in the Room

Networking events. Association meetings. Conferences. Regional meetings. Trade shows. Each of these events represents an opportunity. Making the sale. Making the right connection. Exchanging business cards with the right person.

But how do you know who Mr. or Ms. Right is? Who is the person who can green light your product or service within their company?

One option is the internet. Do your research, find the bigwig's name, do a Google Image search, and you have your target. At the event, you can scan the room until you see the person and introduce yourself.

But what if that's not possible? What if they don't show up? What if Google Image search pulls up nothing? What if you're not sure who your ideal target is?

Thankfully, when this happens, you don't have to randomly approach people and hope they are your mark. You can be a detective at all your future business meetings and use the skills of deciphering body language to discover the most important people in any group.

After speaking at an event, I went to the hotel's lounge to relax and unwind. Wanting to enjoy some alone time, I sat in the far corner booth and began one of my favorite activities: people watching.

There was another conference at the hotel and some of their attendees came to the lounge for a social hour. At first everyone was shaking hands, welcoming one another and being very friendly. After awhile the large group started splitting up into subgroups. 5 women chatting at one table. 3 men laughing at another. 2 women standing and gossiping. But, there was one subgroup that caught my attention.

I noticed 3 gentlemen. One tall, good posture, well dressed. The second was of average height, well dressed, good posture. The third was short, had poor posture, and was - quite frankly - poorly dressed. Who is the most important person of the group?

Most people would say one of the first two gentlemen. They had strong posture, knew how to carry themselves, and their clothing reeked of success. Most people would be wrong.

After knowing a few body language basics, you would know to look more closely. While posture and clothing are good variables to observe, they are surface level indicators that can easily and consciously be altered for any situation. As a body language pro, you would want to look at the unconscious indicators to discover your alpha-person of the group.

In this case - as in most - the feet gave it away. Even though the men were standing in a circle, politely facing each other and looking at one another while they spoke, the feet pointed toward Mr. Important himself, gentleman #3. That's right. Mr. slumped-over-I-don't-need-to-iron-my-clothes-or-put-together-a-snazzy-outfit-like-the-rest-of-you.

The feet of the other two gentlemen were pointed directly at guy #3 like a pointing dog during the hunt. The feet give away so much information unconsciously. They almost always will point towards the direction where you want to be or towards the person you perceive to be the most important person in the conversation.(Where was Mr. Important's feet pointing? The door.)

While initial looks might lead you to one conclusion, body language will give you the power to detect the subtleties that lead you to the truth.

Use this body language detective skill for your next meeting. If you want to converse with the "top dog" just follow the feet.

It is hard to chat when you are 10 feet apart, but you do not wish for to be 6 inches apart either. Generally, 2-3 feet is a comfortable distance for most people during conversation.
